Description

Once again, this Jan term 2025, Professor Madeleine Romero and Scott Chambers will take students to finance and accounting firms in Oregon, Washington, and New York. The first week of the class will be taught in McMinnville and focus on the critical types of firms and the individuals participating in financial markets. The travel portion begins on January 13th in Portland before moving to Seattle and then New York City. The group will return on February 1st.

In the course, the students will meet Linfield alumni who have previously taken the course through formal company visits and informal group meals. Throughout the month, Current Linfield students can hear about career paths and opportunities from finance and accounting alumni, including job successes, stresses, and challenges.

In January 2024, the class visited 17 financial firms and met with over 40 alumni. More visits and interactions with alums are expected in 2025.

Gifts made will help to make this experience extra special for current students, including:

  • Group meals with alumni that promote informal dialogue and learning.

  • Class dinners allow reflection and discussion after a full day of company visits.
  • Museums and shows in New York City enhance student learning beyond the course curriculum. Plans for 2025 include Broadway shows, a visit to Harlem and amateur night at the Apollo Theater, an architectural tour of Manhattan, the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Tenement Museum, and the 9/11 Ground Zero Museum.
  • Every gift received will help provide this year’s students with experiential learning opportunities and memories that will last well beyond their time at Linfield.

A little more information:

From 1999 through 2013, Professor Scott Chambers, often assisted by Professor Madeleine Romero, taught “Seminar in Security Markets.” Over 200 students participated in the course during those years. Prior trip alumni “paid it forward” by helping defray trip costs during those years.

After a ten-year break, Professor Chambers and Professor Romero revived the course in January 2024. After an excellent experience for all in 2024, Professor Chambers and Professor Romero have agreed to offer the course again in January 2025.  As in the past, students will cover the costs of their airfare and NYC hotel (“The Pod”).

A few donations have already been received, but it is not too late to make the trip extra special this year by donating today. Be assured that donations will be spent on this year’s group.
